How a Job Switch Can Lead to Better Pay and Conditions for Veterans

Military family resources San Antonio: Two men at veteran employment service center

Finding Better Opportunities: The Journey of Army Veteran Dante Wins

In a transformative turn of events, Army veteran Dante Wins made a significant career switch that has not just led to better pay, but also improved working conditions tailored to his health needs. Previously employed as a manager in a retail giant's warehouse, the demanding hours exacerbated his service-connected disabilities, causing him physical distress. Recognizing the need for change, Wins turned to the VA's Veterans Readiness & Employment (VR&E) program, seeking a position better suited to his capabilities and aspirations.

The Role of Career Counseling and Networking

Thanks to his determined efforts and guidance from the VR&E team, particularly Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Dawn Jacques and TVC VR&E Liaison Thomas Tichy, Wins was equipped with the tools necessary for success in his job search. Wins demonstrated admirable prowess in understanding labor market dynamics and interview processes. Tichy noted, "What made Wins stand out was his resume already spoke to his extensive education, certification, and experience." Such preparation proved invaluable.

A Perfect Match for Skills and Health

With the collaboration of TVC's Veteran Employer Liaison Carlton Robinson, Wins' resume caught the eye of the Texas Department of Information Resources. This connection led to an offer for the position of Portfolio Project Manager—an exciting role aligning closely with his previous military experience but devoid of the physically taxing demands of his last job. Not only did Wins secure a position free from health concerns, but he also saw his salary increase by an impressive $23,000.

Gratitude and Community Support

Wins expressed sincere thanks to those who assisted him through this transition, illustrating the vital support system present within the veteran community. He thanked each individual by name from the encouragement he received during resume development to support during the interview process. This underscores the importance of networking and utilizing resources available to military families and veterans navigating their career paths.
