Volunteers at La Gran Tamalada San Antonio preparing tamales together.

The Culinary Celebration of La Gran Tamalada

San Antonio's much-loved La Gran Tamalada is back for its ninth annual celebration on December 13-14, turning the Historic Market Square into a festive hub filled with culinary delights, music, and festive workshops. This year, a special twist is added with a student culinary competition that aims to nurture the skills of the next generation of chefs.

An Exciting Competition for Young Chefs

In a bid to inspire young culinary talent, the event will feature six high-school culinary arts programs competing in categories like Traditional and Chef’s Choice. Each school is encouraged to emphasize creativity, as students will prepare one pork tamal and another with unique ingredients. Participating schools include: Brackenridge, East Central, Lanier, Nixon-Smiley, Somerset, and South San High Schools.

A Tantalizing Array of Culinary Experiences

More than just a competition, La Gran Tamalada brings together over ten professional vendors and student booths selling fresh tamales. Attendees can get hands-on through tamal-making workshops which will teach them about crafting this cherished holiday treat. With live music from holiday carolers and Tejano musicians, the festival fosters a vibrant atmosphere where local culture shines.

The Heart of San Antonio’s Culture

Since its inception in 2017, La Gran Tamalada has celebrated the rich traditions of tamale-making, highlighting the city's culinary roots while creating a sense of community. This festival allows locals and visitors alike to indulge in not just food, but also the stories and culture intertwined with these seasonal delights.

Why You Should Attend La Gran Tamalada
