Record-Breaking Fundraising for Child Care Scholarships
In an inspiring showcase of community support, the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County held its annual Power of the Purse auction, raising a remarkable $385,000 to fund the United Way Child Care Scholarship. This initiative, chiefly supported by Women United, aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by parents seeking to further their education while ensuring their children receive quality child care.
Empowering Local Families with Educational Opportunities
The funds raised during this event are set to make a significant difference for local families, many of whom struggle with the costs associated with child care while pursuing job training or degrees. Each scholarship recipient could see up to $14,000 covered for child care, with some families receiving as much as $30,000. This financial support not only empowers parents—like Lola, who is working towards becoming a teacher—but also strengthens the community by enhancing the educational foundations of future generations.
Delightful Community Engagement at Power of the Purse
Held at the vibrant Witte Museum, the event featured an array of designer handbags from brands such as Kate Spade and Chanel, drawing both bidders and community supporters together for a common cause. The evening also honored Corinna Holt Richter with the Joci Straus Visionary Award, highlighting the impact of dedicated community leadership. Even the Spurs’ mascot, Coyote, joined in the celebration of local philanthropy, further emphasizing how community spirit permeates San Antonio.
Join Us in Making a Difference
The success of Power of the Purse wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of event co-chairs Julie Bedingfield and Carrie Dyer, along with extensive community participation. Everyone from local parents to volunteers stepped up to make this event a success. If you want to contribute to such meaningful efforts, consider joining Women United or applying for the United Way Child Care Scholarship.
